Sure enough, adding the aliases to the new server allowed me to point the old server dns records to the new server. We recreated all of the users on the new server and once everything was in place, fired up the new dns info and let it out. As soon as each user session timed out, so long as their dns client now had the new dns info, they automatically reconnected onto the new sipx server.
