Right.  Originally the GATEWAY_DEV wasn't altered on disk for RH like
systems.  Although this worked fine for many of them, certain versions of
Red Hat wouldn't bring up networking at all if this wasn't set.

Could you post the code you are using to ensure consitancy between GATEWAY
and GATEWAY_DEV?  I'll then look at adding it to the mainline code stream.
