I can't speak to all of this, but it looks like Debian is undergoing the
creation of a GUI installer that will use discover for it's hardware
detection.  Hopefully that will give it more active development.

If it becomes a prolonged issue, I'm willing to consider an alternative
for the autodetection piece.
