Subject: [Oscar-devel] needed sis features
Bringing up oscar on some mckinley boxes has pointed out a large need. This=
=20
need was found because we have bleeding edge hardware that requires new=20
drivers that are sometimes only available as already compiled kernel driver=
=20
modules. SIS needs to be able to insmod one or more kernel driver modules=
=20
during initial netboot/initrd time, and we need to update the ia64 kernel=
=20
used with SIS to include a very wide range of hardware including some new=
=20
drivers. We need to go into this during today's phone call. This will=20
involve a few changes to sis:
The size of the initrd ramdisk for ia64 needs to be increased to something=
=20
with Mbytes to spare instead of a few hundred Kbytes of spare space.
Something like wget or ncftp needs to be included in the ramdisk.
Busybox needs to be updated to support insmod for ia64, or the=20
insmod.static binary produced on redhat systems needs to be included in the=
=20
ramdisk.
There needs to be an equivalent of an rpmlist, except that it is a=20
modulelist that specifies kernel modules to be included. These need to=20
either be added in the ramdisk or have some way such as ftp, nfs, http to=
=20
get them off the oscar server.

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors than
zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
