Hi Peter,
Thanks again for the reply. Lilo is not an option for me.
I was able to work around this by using kickstart to do an initial install with the partitions I wanted then run updateclient to load the image on the machine. I haven't looked closely at everything to make sure that this didn't cause me some other problems, however, I was able to boot the machine without running into the issues I encounter when just using systemimager.
This makes me think that systemimager is doing something strange during the creation of the volumes.?? It would be nice to have this work...

It has worked for me with LILO and the stock 3.2.0-stable 3 or 4 times now. I now use LILO instead of GRUB on all servers.

Hi,
I've tried several different things, (except using lilo), with no luck. The result is the same. I can use systemimager to install a Dell2650 with RH9 or AS2.1, however, using it to install RH EL 3.0 still fails with the same problem, (same hardware).
If anyone has any clues on how to fix this it would be much appreciated.

Hi,
The other question I have is:
Is this really a grub issue or something that systemimager is doing during the installation that prevents grub from working properly?
Thanks,
-John

Hi P,
Thanks for the reply.
Interesting. I hadn't experienced this prior to trying RH EL30.
This may not be the forum for this question, however, I always felt that grub was the boot loader of choice. Are there advantages to using lilo?
Thanks,
-John

Hi John,
I had the exact same problems. Grub works sometimes. Lilo works every time. Switch to lilo and your problems go away.

Subject: [Sisuite-users] Problem booting Dell 2650 w/ RHEL30 after installation
Hi,
I've successfully done several installs of RH9 and AS2.1 using systemimager to a Dell 2650. I'm now attempting to use systemimager to install RedHat EL 3.0 onto the 2650. It installs fine with no errors, however, fails to boot with the following error:
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at bolck 0
crc error<6>Freeing initrd Memory: 317k freed
VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00
I'm using grub as the boot loader and have tried several different options for the root device, including using the physical location "/dev/sda1" with no luck. I've tried a couple of different 2650s and still no luck.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone else run into this using systemimager?
Thanks,
-John
