The source packages in the systemimager tarballs are for the internal use of systemimager only, at least that's how it worked for me. They only get used to build the bootable image that systemimager uses to bootstrap a bare-metal system.

There isn't a current ebuild for gentoo yet. I've been meaning to
give it a whirl, but work keeps getting in the way. I have
installed it from the source tarballs on Gentoo without significant
hassles, though. Maybe this weekend I will write up some documentation
for it, since the issue comes up more often these days.

Yes.. I HAVE to learn how-to make ebuilds... :)

You really are better off installing a second node to act as the golden image. If you use the master, you will have a heck of a time keeping the machinery of systemimager server off from the clients. In theory, you could do the install in a chroot on the server, but I haven't tried this myself yet, so I can't vouch for it's safety or feasability.

Do you mean whith something like make install_server_all ?

I was looking at the source tarball ang got a bit afraid tha since it
has a bunch of source tarballs from other packages, it would install
all of them blindly over my system...
