I ran into a similar problem with gentoo. I just went around the
problem and added an rsync /dev/* to /a/dev right before the crhoot.

It's clear no proc filesystem got mounted. And most likely my
kernel does not support devfs. My goldenclient runs SuSE Enterprise 9
which does not use devfs. But I think proc should have mounted.
Any ideas?
