Upon further inspection, I am actually not using the SystemImager kernel. Silly me. I was, in fact, doing a UYOK setup, I think the term is, and was under the impression that it was the BOEL kernel.
Thanks to the people in the IRC channel who lent their support in this issue, which ended up being quite educational on a variety of topics (I still need to figure out what's going on with my ability to generate initrds by hand, but that's another matter...)
