I believe Brian routinely builds on Ubuntu - that's about all I know about 
Debian/Ubuntu.  I mainly build on Red Hat/Fedora systems.

Perhaps you an post your errors (perhaps you have already done so?) that would 
help us troubleshoot the build problems.
