Hi Simon:

Yes, you need a /etc/systemconfig/systemconfig.conf in your image, and
it looks something like this:

CONFIGBOOT = YES
CONFIGRD = YES

[BOOT]
        ROOTDEV = /dev/sda6
        BOOTDEV = /dev/sda
        DEFAULTBOOT = 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp

[KERNEL0]
        PATH = /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
        LABEL = 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
