didn't even know there is an imaging log (I guess I never needed to 
look).  where is it?

this is exactly what I did.  when put something in the overrides 
directory and imaged the system, only my script was in /etc/rc5.d/ and 
when I removed it from the overrides directory and reimaged everything 
was there as it should be.
