Ah, that does seem to have helped matters. If I now make a CD with the 
standard flavour, it successfully boots, but then goes off to get the 
image from an image server at an IP I don't recognise.

If I make the autoinstall image with a flavour other than standard, i.e. 
the latest image I've taken (after installing that RPM above), then I 
get the same kernel panic issue.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with the options as to how to make 
the boot process on a standard configuration do anything other than its 
default behaviour. Which it prints
Using DHCP server (very deprecated) IMAGESERVER  172.16.194.254

That IP address is not anything to do with here as far as I can tell.
