The issue with your solution is that the resulting tarball will be named systemimager-4.2.0.tar.bz2 which is incorrect/misleading. Also, this is a RPM-specific thing and will not work with Debian packages. I will be happy to incorporate any patches you can provide which facilitate the snapshot building process. Right now, I just have 4.1.99.svn4555_bli in the VERSION file and everything is correctly set.
