Bread and Puppet in Boston January

Bread and Puppet Theater is a performing and visual arts troupe based in
Vermont. They are known for their political satire and untraditional
puppetry and performances. The company has been around since the 1960s
and continues to bring audiences to both cheer and scratch their heads
with their most unusual performances. This week, Bread and Puppet visits
Boston with its “cheap art and political theater.”

The company just opened the art exhibit “NOLANGUAGE” by artistic
director Peter Schumann in Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts.
The exhibit puts on display some of Schumann’s unique political and
religious satire as well as some seemingly nonsensical displays which he
calls “No Language” for its use of non-complete thoughts and sentences.
At the opening of the exhibit, Schumann introduced his art with a
hilarious song he wrote for the fiddle. The performance gave a great
deal of prospective to the art on display.

The NOLANGUAGE exhibit opened January 24 and will remain open to the
public until Sunday, January 30. Additionally, Bread and Puppet Theater
will be performing two of its shows in the same space. The first is The
Return of Ulysses, which is an adaptation of the Claudio Monteverdi
opera. The show will run at 7pm from January 27-30 at Cyclorama. After
each show there will be a talk-back with the performers and sourdough
rye bread will be served. The show is recomended for ages 12 and above.
Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for students and seniors.

The second production is Decapitalization Circus, which is a
family-friendly deconstruction of politics. Matinee performances will
run Saturday and Sunday this weekend (Jan. 29 and 30) at 4pm also at
Cyclorama. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students,
seniors, and children 2 and under.

To purchase tickets for either of the performances, you can do so by
visiting the Bread and Puppet website, calling 866-811-4111 (toll free),
or purchasing at the door starting an hour before performance time. All
performances take place at Cyclorama, 539 Tremont St. in the South End.

Little did I know before attending the opening of NOLANGUAGE that Bread
and Puppet shows are often performed by the company as well as a large
number of local volunteers. When I introduced myself as the Boston
Circus Arts Examiner, I was immediately asked if I would be interested
in joining one of the two shows! Who knows, maybe you will see me on
stage this weekend in the Decapitalization Circus!
