Volkswagen Surprises with Electric 'Bulli'
evworld.com | Mar 1st 2011
In the 1960s and '70s it was the ultimate expression of the counter culture.
Often festooned with bright, garish colors and psychedelic imaginary, the VW
Bus became a historic icon.
Now forty years later, many of those aging 'hippies' would approve what
Volkswagen is showing at the 2011 Geneva auto show: an all-electric, zero
tailpipe emission version affectionately referred in its native Germany as
the 'Bulli.'
The VW 'study' seats six, three in the sold front row seat and three in the
second row, which when folded down provides 1,600 liters of cargo volume.
Measuring 3.99 meters (157 in.) in length, it's wheelbase is 2.62 meters
(104 in.), shorter than the VW Touran.
Its electric drive system consists of a 85kW (115 hp) electric motor and
enough lithium-ion batteries in the vehicles double floor to propel it 300
km (186 mi.) Charge time is said to be less than an hour, suggesting it is
designed to handle Direct-DC charging. Top speed is said to be 140 km/h (87
mph).
Unfortunately, if VW does decide to build the Bulli, it will likely be
powered by gasoline and diesel engines, rather than electric drive,
according to the VW-Bulli.de web site.
