The nation needs at minimum 100 new plants by 2015, it takes an average of 10 years to get one going and the nation has started building only 3. Aging power plants are coming off line now and many more must be shut down for age related unsafe operation issues in the next few years. This at the same time as additional demand on the grid from such things as electric cars and larger data control centers add to the already growing needs. http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2005/3235build_nukes_fast.html So, with all this going on, D.C. has figured out how to "save you money". 18 million "smart meters" are going to be installed, stimulating the economy and reducing electricity usage nation wide by 4%. http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/27/news/economy/smart_grid/index.htm As a life long electrical contractor, I can tell you there is only one way to save money with electricity: TURN IT OFF. These smart meters communicate with the electrical utility supplying your power. Instead of enough new power plants, what is coming is national rationed electricity. Statigic needs (can you say government) will stay on, homes are the bottom of the list. Experts may have enough brains to realize that compressor equipped appliances like A/C units, refrigerators and freezers can be damaged if not left off for 15 minutes or so before restarting, so we are not looking at just a minute or 2 of black out at a time. Once in place, this "smart" system could increase your "off time" beyond what is originally promised as the grid sinks further. Get the dust off your oil lamps . Unless the national energy policies change quickly, we are literally going back to the dark ages. --Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ and AVG Virus Protection.
