I wanted to follow-up with two minor corrections to my post ...

1) To correctly copy the notes using rsync, you need the -E (-- 
extended-attributes) flag, something like:

rsync -avubE     SRCDIR/     lo...@dst-machine:MIRRORDIR/

2) The ellipses "lo..." were not intended.  The listserv has detected   
"login AT dst-machine:MIRRORDIR/", and decided to protect login's  
identity.

I tested this on 10.5.8, and it works so far.   I haven't noticed any  
limits as described in this thread
