Yes, I think so, but I don't get the gray page. The invisible page
causes the previous page to be dimmed. When I close the invisible
page, the previous page becomes dark again. Yes, the very same pdf
will be displayed sometimes and not others.

could it be that you have the same effect as I do?
Does Skim show you an empty bray page and in the header is the
number of the last page?
I, too, experienced: sometimes SKIM does it OK, sometimes I only get
a gray page (from the very same pdf).

Attached is one such pdf. It will open with Adobe.
If I restart Skim, the attached pdf will open in Skim. But it won't
be visible immediately after download. Most pdfs are opening
invisibly and most will open visible after restarting Skim.
