to my greatest regret: I got the gray, last page again.
Although I have installed the testversion and although up till this
hour everything went fine, now I have that effect again.
Is there anything I can do or just wait for the next version and hope
it will be OK then?

It sounds like the same problem, whatever it is. Is there
something special with these PDFs? Do they have a TOC (or not)?
Are they encrypted (which is not the same as whether they require
a password)?
I put a test version to test something out on http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/Skim.dmg
, does this have this problem? (This is not a fix, it's only to
test something out).

Attached is one such pdf. It will open with Adobe.
If I restart Skim, the attached pdf will open in Skim. But it
won't
be visible immediately after download. Most pdfs are opening
invisibly and most will open visible after restarting Skim.
