I foolishly trashed the previous version ... though I suppose I could
recover it from my backups.

Yes, I do the same thing.  You might like the atchange program I
invented which makes that easier:

I set up atchange to watch the latex source and trigger running latex.
Skim watches the pdf and updates.  So I can stay in my editor (vim)
and never move my fingers from the keyboard to see the changes.
