Many other presentation systems have a keyboard shortcut for showing or hiding 
the “pointer”.
(E.g., in Keynote, that’s the C key.)
It is also worthwhile looking at how the iOS version of keynote handles its 
“laser”.

There used to be a feature that, in presenter mode, you could move the cursor 
over the presenter view of the slide and see the pointer on the screen view.  
Can’t reproduce this right now...

Good question.  Now that maybe is a matter for a preference.
(For the standard cursor, the size may also be varied using the accessibility 
settings of macOS; my wife has that option set one notch larger all the time so 
it’s more visible in presenter mode.)
