There are several ways to display the sun, moon, and planets. What you're seeing is probably just a generic moon symbol. Click preferences>catalog and objects parameters... and click the "planets" tab. That's where the display settings for the sun, moon, and planets are.
In this window, under "planet appearance", you probably have "as symbol" selected. Change that to either "according to the size and magnitude" or "according to the size". If you use "according to the size and magnitude", you may need to zoom in. Also, below this, click "show realistic planet images", which makes a huge difference!
