Hi, all, and Patrick.

There was a question on the Quickcam and Unconventional Imaging Yahoo
group re how to find geosynchronous satellites. I said "easy, use CdC"
but when I tried to go through the procedure step by step to show how,
I couldn't get geosynchronous satellites to list, much less display.
Looking back, I think maybe I didn't use CdC to do this when I did it
a year ago, but rather a program called "Satellite Tracker." Which is
also able to point a Meade scope which I think is how I found my local
Satellite TV bird.

Anyway, here's an example of what I'm doing and what comes out.
Perhaps Patrick or somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or if
indeed this is a limitation of the software.

I have the latest TLE download thingie installed (the Christopher
Welfare program, dated January 4, 2004).

Just to be sure I was starting fresh, I deleted all the existing .tle
and .txt files in the folder /cartes du ciel/cat/satellites (I know
that's not really necessary).

Went to "calendar" in the top toolbar (the icon with the "21" in it),
clicked on the "artificial satellites" tab, clicked on "TLE Download"
button, it opened the Christopher Welfare interface. Now, the file
"alldat.txt" doesn't seem to be working correctly, but I highlighted
all the others, from amateur.txt to x-comm.txt, hit "download," and
they all downloaded. The button "tle format" is checked. The files
that were loaded to the /cdc/cat/satellites folder are all .tle files.

Now to do a test with geo.tle CdC is using system time, auto
refresh. I set limiting magnitude in both list and chart at 20.
Checked box "for current chart only." Highlit the group "geo.tle." Hit
"refresh" and all I get is a single object, "AO-49." There should be a
lot more than that.

As a test, I did the same for visual.tle and got many listings.

So, why aren't many more geosynchronous satellites showing up when I
do this?

Thanks in advance,

Pete
