It sounds like you've changed the grid spacing setting.
Click preferences>grid spacing and set it to the default "0" setting.  Using
other values can give odd spacings (especially when an odd number is used for
this setting.  Even numbers seem to work better).  Another odd behavior is that
when zoomed in far enough, it can give rectangles that are very wide compared
to their height.  But using the standard setting generally works well.
I believe Patrick has mentioned that this will be improved in V.3.
