Subject: Re: [skychart-discussion] Globular Clusters
There are 355 (Sargent et al. 1974) or 509 (Crampton et al. 1985) globulars,
403 open clusters, 188 stellar associations and 730 dust clouds in M31. I
wonder how many are observable with amateur equipment.
According to Star Clusters (B. Archinal & S. Hynes) some objects suggest
that they are faint, background galaxies, so the actual number of globulars
in M31 is still unclear. The brightest globular in M31 is G1 or Mayall II at
13,7. Also there are globulars in the Magellanic clouds, the Fornax Dwarf.
NGC 4594 (Sombrero) has 400 globulars (Forbes et al. 1997), and there are
about 6000 (six thousand) globulars candidates in M87. Some estimates put
the total number of globulars for M87 at 30.000 (Racine 1980).
