If you need further vector graphics processing:
On your Linux box, try importing the bitmap into Inkscape (or Sodipodi) and use 
the Trace Bitmap feature to convert it to vector. It should work just fine. 
Also 
Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Flash (Doze & Mac) does pretty much the same 
thing (if you can afford Illustrator or Flash).
