Hans, Notepad has worked for me but UltraEdit-32 has lots of features if you need lots of manipulation. GatGen allows the CR-LF pair so Notepad works. I tried the new varspec file and found that CatGen was rejecting some of the entries for no good reason. There is some sort of bug in CatGen and variables that causes this. I don't know of a workaround. IF anyone else wants to see the bug download the varspec file and try this: Generate a catalog from varspec and you will find 3C273 in the rejected list. Change only the Ra-minutes to a value around 24 (from 26) or less and 3C273 is accepted into the catalog. This holds true for all the other rejected entries. I have not run across this problem before and I don't know how to get around it. Maybe Patrick can shed some light on why this is happening. Bob
