Many deep catalogs are derived from old film-based "all sky surveys", mainly 
the Palomar POSS surveys.  These were done on glass film plates, and there are 
some defects in the emulsions that get detected by automated scanning 
procedures.  I'm not sure why these plate defects would be listed in the 
resulting catalog.
