Thanks for the quick replies and sorry about the slow reply. I was at a Star 
Party and there was no internet hookup.

Concerning drivers, as I noted in my original post I have the latest Ascom 
driver plus the "update" they note on the Ascom site. (As a part of reloading 
all the lost software on my laptop I had to replace Ascom, too.) And I've 
selected "LX200 plus Autostar" as my scope type.

I'm using a USB to serial adapter to connect the 505 cable to my laptop (my 
laptop doesn't have any serial connectors). Do I need a null modem between the 
505 cable and the USB adapter? I have one in my "parts I sometimes need" box, 
but I don't remember whether I used it in this setup or not.
