Your message gave me the clue I needed.
If I have several catalogues enabled, Barnards star (and others)is not always 
visible but with just the Tyco catalogue it shows, so some catalogues seem to 
mask data from others.

Even more strange, if I have NO catalogues enabled CdC still finds manu objects 
and displays a label but not the star itself!
