Maybe you have one of the catalogs selected that has extended objects, and you 
are landing in the middle of a large nebulosity or open cluster. Uncheck all 
external catalogs (be sure to check the Size and Magnitude tabs also) and all 
of the Nebula catalogs and see if the same thing happens.
