Actually, the first method you gave is airtight, meaning it will work regardless of what other people are typing. The second, Alt+Shift+5 method, on the other hand, will get you the wrong message if even one line shows up between your Alt+5 to read it and your Alt+Shift+5 to grab it.

The standard way to get a message to the clipboard is to find it in the chat message list and type Ctrl+C from there.
