I can tell you that Skype is now dedicated to making things accessible, but I'm not sure how smooth this first beta will be for us yet. Keep in mind, though, that there are several things not in the first beta, according to that article. As a beta tester, I have been using the new Skype, with its new interface, for quite a while now; so it is obviously possible. Between Skype, the company, and some script updates, we should have our access preserved as we cross this bridge.
Btw, and I'm sure you didn't mean this, but... I know they're not "trying" to make it harder for us to access Skype. Business models do make developers change the appearance of a program sometimes. Also, I so far see no reason why the old Skype would quit working all of a sudden. That's never been how they do things.
