Lol, quite a thread formed here while I was in the air going from Tallinn to Amsterdam. :-)
Answering a few people in one post: First, Teddy said: > Hi Doug, why you not update the scripts for skype 4 beta? In fact I do have more up-to-date scripts than I've released, but I haven't released them yet because I wrote them against betas that are also not released yet. I doubt they'd work as well with what you have, compared to the scripts on my web site for Skype 4. Bruce then put forth: > Yeah, Doug is so derelect in his duty. All he does is fly around to talk > to the Skype people in person about how to make Skype more accessible. All > he does is dedicate all sorts of time and energy to making it accessible > for all of us. All he does is put in tons of work at no charge to us and > hardly a word of gratitude from any of us. The nerve! Well, to be fair, Skype actually paid me for this particular trip. This was a contract. They also paid my air fare to Chicago a few months ago as many here may recall. No one pays me for the scripts, but I sort of chose Skype as my personal project to keep up with, and I'm happy with the way that's working. It's always more fun to maintain scripts for something I use every day anyway. :) Jim then presented an analysis of why I haven't released updated beta scripts, and it's pretty accurate and appears right below these comments of mine, so I won't copy that up here. As to his suggestion for me to script Skype for Window-Eyes, I'm not specifically against doing that, but there are a few things in the way: time is one. The fact that Window-Eyes doesn't work as well as JAWS at console screens, where I do much of my work, prevents me from using Window-Eyes except when I have a specific need; so I would not naturally be testing Window-Eyes Skype scripts while working on other things as things are now. Finally, I was under the impression that the current Window-Eyes Skype scripts were a continuing development effort. Were I to tackle Skype script development for Window-Eyes, my first move would probably be to talk to the authors of the current scripts so any direction I might take would neither uselessly duplicate effort nor upset the authors of what's already out there. As you have indicated in your message Skype 4.0 is still in beta. This by definition means that it is still a moving target. So therefore, developing scripts for a beta product takes considerably more time and effort than any stable release. Before updating the scripts any further Doug will need to see what internal accessibility implementation is made. for a beta product it would be sort of pointless to implement accessibility only to find that internal implementation, was made later also, if any user interfaces are changed. The scripts will necessarily need to undergo some sort of adjustment. Doug is meeting with developers to discuss accessibility implementation I think we can all rest assured that once Doug knows what accessibility implementation will be made and what user interface changes will be made that Skype scripts for 4.0 will be made available for jaws for Windows. I would also love to see Doug examine window eyes, and perhaps develop scripts for Skype for that product as well. GW micro has provided scripts for window eyes, but they are nowhere near as robust as the ones we have for jaws. I hope this information is useful.
