Do you have multiple sound cards? If so, check Skype Options, Audio page, to make sure your record, playback, and ring devices are set correctly. Sounds work fine here, but when I plug in a Creative Soundblaster Live 24-bit external USB sound device, not all Skype devices automatically switch to use it.
