That is the number of conversations tht remain to be read. Think of that number as new messages in an inbox. Hit control pluss numrow 2 to access that inbox. Now it depends on what view you are in.
Hit enter to open the new conversation and take a look at it with the usual chat reading commands. Now if you are in compact view escape from the conversation or if you are in default view, control numrow 2 will take you back to the list.
