Go to view and up arrow. If it says compact view you are on default . Take care.

For some reason if you keep Skype in default view it will speak online and offline statuses on contacts with no trouble. You will have to do CTRL Tab to move through chats! But it's better than notthing. Not shure why Jaws won't while in compact though.
