Hi Doug has documented the problems using the skype api with jaws. Basically using the skype api causes problems for jaws itself that would make using it a major problem.

Somewhere between 4.1 and the 4.2 beta release, there was apparently a change in the systray alerts for sign ins and sign outs. There is no longer any MSAA text in those. As a result, there is nothing for JAWS or any other screen reader to announce for those, and I am not able to provide the SkypeWatch announcements for sign ins and sign outs in the released Skype 4.2 beta. This is an issue that Skype would have to fix, so I welcome people to contact them about it. Note that SkypeWatch is not entirely dead in Skype 4.2 beta: It should still announce incoming calls and changes in your Skype status.
