Skype should make those sounds by default, unless she's actually in the window with the incoming messages. Skype 4 does not make the chat sound when you're in the same window where the chat is coming in. This can not be changed. What she can do, if she's not getting the sounds anywhere at all, is check in Options to see if the sounds are enabled for the events of interest. It would probably work better for you to walk her through that than for me to give a pile of specific instructions in here. :)
