Thanks to all- This info might be something to make available to any newcomers to Skype.
This also gives me an option, with Talking, to be able to download the program if I am somewhere where there is no speech in a computer. With some sighted help I can download the Talking program and use Skype on any computer. Thanks for the network of help. Skype talking provides things that the scripts don't. the scripts provide things that skype talking doesn't. and both perform some of the same tasks. So if you get them both you can decide for yourself which one performs your task better. Lets run down a few examples. The scripts don't provide access to status messages. This is an issue skype will have to fix to allow for active accessibility support. Skype talking allows for the reading of status messages. This will always work because skype talking uses the skype API to get this information so no matter what skype version you are using you will have access to this information. The scripts allow for access to parts of the skype program with a key press. The scripts also get information from msaa to read information in the skype program like where you are in the contact list etc. skype talking does not do this because skype talking gets information from the skype API and is not a screen reader. Skype talking has a easy means of working with contacts the scripts use the standard skype contact list. The scripts provide access to the skype conversation panel where skype talking provides a fast way of switching to conversations that are active. Both skype talking and the scripts allow for the reading of chat messages. The scripts get information from the skype user interface skype talking gets it's information from the API of skype. So as you can see having them both give you the best of both worlds. This is not either or. You can then see what they both do and decide what course of action you want to take. For example do you want the scripts to read chat messages or you want skype talking to do it. Do you want to use the conversation panel to find active chats or do you want to use skype talking commands. Do you want to use the skype contact list or would you rather use skype talking's contact manager. Or sometimes you might use one in one situation and the other in another. This is all about power and flexibility. These are all tools in your tool box use them as you see fit. Oh one more note about this subject skype talking has one big advantage over the scripts in that skype talking does it's thing no matter what screen reader is in use. Doug's scripts only work with jaws. Now window-eyes has good support for skype as well but using both scripts and skype talking you really get a nice powerful user experience. There are the Doug Lee scripts which I downloaded for Skype 4.2 with Windows 7 and JAWS 11. They are very helpful. Then we have Skype Talking, which seem to duplicate many of the Doug Lee script functions. In addition, Talking appears to have different commands for the same functions as are performed with the Scripts. Is Skype Talking used instead of the Scripts, in conjunction with the scripts.? If they are used together, which commands should be the primary commands and does one interfere with the other. If there is a site to go to get these things straight it may be helpful for new users. So far I have been exposed to; Skype Watch, Skype Talking and Doug Lee Scripts. Can you see the dilemma? For experienced users of Skype, all of this makes sense but some of us have to start at the beginning. As Jim often reminds us, start with the documentation. However, I don't know if there is documentation to sort out the different options for successfully accessing Skype. In addition, are there functions that Talking handles better the Scripts or vice versa? Wayne Thanks for posting to the skype english list.
