Skype five is about the same as 4.2 so far I have seen nothing in this
version that I can't live with out. Not only that but it is in beta so

Well Jim fortunately I am in college and I have internet explorer 8
running
on a Windows XP by choice though I do have another CD with Windows Vista
on
it I just choose to use XP. When I do upgrade from XP I will purchase
Windows 7 from the store inside the bookstore for I think fifty something
dollars (U.S.). Since I am a student I can purchase it from them at a
reduced rate. I also have a Dell laptop 1545 running JAWS 10 as well as
two
other computers. I just thought I would be the voice for the less
fortunate
and play the Devil's advocate for a little bit. Hoping that people would
see
the other side of the coin like i think Sara had mentioned earlier. Also I
am waiting on reports of the accessibility to come back whether Skype 5 is
or is not better than the Skype 4.2 that I currently have. Take care

Josh it isn't just going to be one program. It might start out that
way but as time goes buy there is going to be more and more. For
example you will find that your sound editing software no longer works
under 98 you will find that you can't get on windows live with 98.
Some pages will not even display under 98 so now you can't pay your
bills because internet explorer

is no longer supported. It is not just going to be skype. And this
always comes up that people think main stream providers should support
all this old stuff just because some blind people can't afford to
update to new stuff.
People this is not there problem and they should not be forced to
support old stuff just because x person can't afford to update. Fact
is these are not the people the company will be making money on any way.

Also something to consider is why would a person upgrade there system
for one program? Especially if everything else is serving there
particular needs. If Skype is going to support the later versions then
I see no need for someone that rarely gets on the computer other than
using Skype to put themself in a financial hardship to please
everyone else. What is that saying "Today isn't your day and tomorrow
doesn't look good eitehr". Well that is my two cents worth. Maybe when
programs that they use on a regular basis start failing on them then
it might be time to start looking for a new system until then they are
happy with what they have and that is all that matters. Have a good one.

This is true but the facts are still that as your computer gets older
there will be less and less you can do with it. For example my
friend running windows xp if she doesn't update to something new soon
will be unable to use windows live products etc. this is the facts
of life and old computers.so it isn't that I don't feel for these
people it is the fact that at some point the world moves on and if
you can't move on with it buy some means then you get left behind.
Sad but true. If you're going to use windows me
98 and even xp to a degree these days you can expect fewer and fewer
products and services to work with that computer.

Jim,
I think you need to take into consideration that not everybody has
the money to upgrade their computers. I personally agree with you to
some extend but it's not fair for you to talk that way considering
that some people really can't afford the luxury of a new computer,
let alone a screen reader which costs an arm and a leg unfortunately.
If you are able to afford all this, then that's great but not
everyone is in the same situation as you are.
The
other thing is that there are probably people from different
countries on this list and some governments do not help blind people
buy a new computer or a screen reader so that also needs to be taken
into
consideration.
Unfortunately, not everyone is fortunate and we all need to remember
that instead of bashing those who don't upgrade their skype,
computers, Jaws and what not.
