Oh dear that sounds awful! I found other services which might be of interest. Both sites allow for the creation of virtual numbers and voicemail, but the first (although slightly cheaper) only has forwarding numbers to skype as a beta.
http://www.didww.com/ http://www.jetnumbers.com/ both are more expensive than an online number if you pay for a year, but it's better than not having access at all. If you decide to go that way I would definitely make sure the U.S. is included in that plan. Once I recieved the 5000.00 phone bill I started making sure I ask them all the questions I can possibly think of such as fees, hidden charges, where exactly I can call on the plan, is there a connection fee when calling out of the country and so on.
