Because it's a command-line utility and not everyone anymore likes
typing commands, I usually don't recommend Clisk as the solution to a
Skype problem. But in this case, it directly presents a possibility:
If you run Clisk on your Skype machine, and you one time type in the
Clisk window,
AA * s
you will grant everyone that can send you a chat line permission to
ask your computer how many calls you currently have active. From then
on, as long as Clisk is running, if someone were to send you the chat
line ?stat (that's a question mark and the word "stat" with no
spaces), your Skype, assisted by Clisk, would send a chat line back
indicating how many calls exist and in what state, e.g., 1 call in
progress and 1 held locally. This of course requires that you tell
your contacts how to ask your machine this, and it does generate chat
traffic, which opens chat windows etc., but it's at least an
alternative.
For those who don't know, Clisk is a Python program I wrote and
maintain at http://www.dlee.org/skype/clisk/ that allows you to
control Skype from a console window. Clisk stands for Command Line
Interface for Skype.

This is just a suggestion, and you can try something else instead if
you wish, but this has worked for me.
