Hi Moti,
I don't know if this could help you because I don't have your problem,
but here's something you can try.
Unload skype 5.1, then go into your skype folder and delete these two files.
config.lck
config.xml.
once you deleted them, open skype and reconfigure it back again with all
your settings, hotkeys and etc.
The folder I'm referring to on windows 7 is located at
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Skype\YourSkypeName

I sincerely did not find what you're mentioning about call not working in
5.1, no issue at all. Could it be your ram?
For the automatic updates of Skype 3.8, try quitting Skype and launching the
file which you can download here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4752212/skypeupd-en.bat
If you don't hear anything after opening it, try pressing down harrow; you
should hear, "Enter Skype ID".
