By "Skype shop," I assume you mean "In Store Shop," which is where,
for example, the Freetalk wireless and wired headsets come from. I
have obtained five headsets from them, though I only bought three.
That, I'm afraid, is a long story. I mention it to say this though:
I find their products very good, their willingness to work through
problems decent, their ability to execute sales without problems less
than average, and my overall experience with them, good enough to try
again, though not without a little caution and watchfulness. I have
not found any wireless headsets anywhere else in the world with both
the quality and range offered by the Freetalks, and wireless is just
about essential for the way I seem to carry on these days. :)

In case it's useful, what follows is my personal experience with all
the headsets I've obtained through In Store Shop - which, by the way,
is a separate company from Skype and not under Skype's control.

I have one wired headset from them, and it is of great sound quality
and decent construction. Perhaps a bit of a tight fit on my head, but
I carry it with me on all business trips as a backup for my wireless
choices.

The original Freetalk wireless, now two years old, is very bulky but
sounds excellent and has the amazing 60-foot range that Freetalks all
have. I haven't seen anything else out there that can do even 50
feet.

That older, bulky model has now been replaced by two lighter and
slimmer alternatives: The Everyman is the slimmest and cheaper of the
two, and currently my preference. The Freedom is the more expensive
of the two. They both have the 60-foot range and decent sound. The
Everyman is lighter and doesn't squeeze my head as hard as the
Freedom. The Freedom has cupped earpieces that sit on, not all the
way around the ear. So you hear less outside noise from your
surroundings, but it's not as isolating as the full-ear surround style
of headset. The Everyman has pads that sit more lightly on the ears,
so you lose very little of the surrounding sound. For me, that's
fine.

The Everyman's mic is a very short plastic thing that you can aim
toward yourself, but it picks up so well that I find aiming it largely
unnecessary. The only problem with the mic being so short is that it
picks up from the headset itself, so for instance, if I'm using JAWS
at a fair volume, a Skype caller can hear it. The more expensive
Freedom's mic is on a flexible boom, distanced enough from the headset
itself to avoid most of this "talkback" problem.

I have read that the Freedom, I think it was the Freedom, has what is
called "side tone," which is the ability for you to hear yourself as
you talk through the headset, like on a standard telephone receiver.
I do not experience this at all in mine though, so I wonder if I
misread that.

The In Store Shop site has more specifics on exactly what's in each of
their headsets, but I hope this was helpful to anyone looking for
headsets for Skype.

Hi!
I'm not sure that it's a great idea purchasing a microphone from Skype
itself, judging from the experience my Dad had. He bought a USB headset from
the Skype shop, and he was charged for two headsets when he only ordered
one, then he had to battle with Skype to get the second payment refunded.
But that may be a one-off problem, so, even though I personally don't
recommend the Skype shop after my Dad's experience, I wouldn't tell people
to avoid it if they want to use it.
I've never had a desktop microphone, which I gather is what you want,
Yvonne, so I can't advise about those. I have a wired headset with a
microphone included, with two jacks rather than a USB connection, and I
bought it in an ordinary shop, having seen on the packaging that it was
recommended for Skype, and I'm happy with the headset I have. I can
definitely see the advantages of desktop microphones and wireless headsets,
though.
Anyway, Yvonne, whatever advice we give you here, you have to make your own
decision in the end as to what will suit you best, as far as microphones are
concerned.
Bye for now, and happy skyping!
