I understand that there are extremes in this controversy, but I think comparing Skype to Facebook is at risk of causing a bit of confusion.
I compare Skype chat texts to SMS cell phone texts, and Skype calls to actual telephone calls. In these cases, there is a reasonable expectation that a person sending text to or calling someone will not be "watched" by unrelated people. Government wiretapping of actual telephone calls is not new, and time will tell where the idea of "tapping" Skype and other online calls will go. However, we generally assume that the telephone company is not in the business of archiving our texts and voice conversations. I think this expectation is the source of the adverse reaction when we hear of a company like Skype considering such archiving.
