This is all likely a Skype problem. You do not need to format as Skype worked just fine before the upgrade, right?
On the windows 7 issue, you can buy an OEM copy for $90 (Not an upgrade). This is the full 64bit version of Windows7 home premium. If you use Window Eyes you can pick up the pro version of Windows7 for about $120 OEM. I would look closely at your computer as it is very likely you have a hidden restore partition on that laptop. If the computer has never been formatted, then it is likely that you can use the hidden restore partition to return that computer to the exact way it was when it was turned on the first time. Just about all new computers in the last few years have shipped with a hidden partition. You might also want to search for a utility that will help you find the Windows7 registration numbers. You have options without having to install Win8 or buy a new computer.
