The short answer is maybe and maybe not, but read on for details. I uncheck two things to reduce or get rid of ads in Skype. Both are in Options: One is in Privacy Settings and is called something like Show Microsoft Targeted Ads. The other is in Alerts and Messages and is called Promotions.
But you can still get ads if you do not subscribe to any Skype paid services like SkypeIn or SkypeOut. There is no way I know of to disable these in Skype without purchasing something. I have read several rather techie tricks to disable these, such as adding to a "hosts" file in Windows to trick Skype into failing to find the ads, or editing the Trusted Sites list to interfere with Skype's ability to get them. I believe both of these require administrative privileges and a fair degree of technical confidence and competence. Unfortunately I don't have directions handy for these approaches at my current location, but perhaps someone else on this list does, if you are interested. I did verify that this ad issue occurs with and without scripts; it is Skype itself moving focus to the ad.
