Compact view is still available - that's the one where chats come up as separate windows instead of being part of the Skype window. In at least Skype 6.22, it is renamed to "Split Window View" but appears to be the same thing.
Simple List View is explained elsewhere in this thread and/or in other ones from yesterday and is just a way to reduce how much information appears with each entry in the Contacts and Conversations lists.
