Hi Randy and list. To make chats appear in a separate window, do the following:
Open the View menu by pressing Alt+V, then arrow down to Compact View (or Split View if you're using Skype 6.22), then press Enter. If in either version of Skype you find Default View instead, that means Compact View/Split View is already active.
